I went right for Batman #12, as most probably did.

Cover to Harper Row #1

Sure, in wrapping up the Owls, Snyder fell prey to the monster that stalks every storyline from its beginning: its end; but he had been remarkably consistent up until then, turning us and twisting us like a bat in frenzied flight.  So, it was no surprise that I opened the book with the highest of expectations.  I turned the first page, the next—the next, even—and got all twisted up.  I looked back at the cover, went back to the story, la-di-da, got a fleeting fix of the Bat, was like “OK, whatever” about Harper’s bizarre fixation on Batman’s grip on the grid, and was ultimately distracted by the sudden change in the artwork.  But again, whatever.  So what do we have with this book?  An out-of-the-blue–but undeniably cleverly framed–origin that essentially reveals a secret Snyder’s been keeping since issue #1 and teases out in issue #7–not one that I had been thinking of, at all, really, if I’m being honest.  (I pulled #7 to see why the whole Harper Row thing didn’t necessarily resonate with me.  Seems that it has too many stand-out moments–including a few stunning splashes and the shocking panel in which Batman strikes Nightwing after Nightwing rips Bruce for keeping “[his] secrets,” which leads to Bruce’s revealing one doozy about Nightwing’s owly destiny–one that spurred conversation among Batreaders everywhere, leaving, in my case anyway, the mystery girl, Snyder’s  own heart-charging secret, forgotten in the shadows.)  A second read of #12 proved helpful in my overall assessment of the book.  I don’t dislike it.  I understand it’s a buffer between storylines and a set up, one with some sort of payoff somewhere down the line.  When it happens, it happens.  Until then, bring on the Joker!

So, then I read Suicide Squad #12.  Looks like I’m on board for the next few, at least.  That’s not what I was thinking at first, though.  From page one, I wanted each of the the Squad members to be sacrificed to the god of comics that had run their course.  But, the draw of the series–the fact that you can’t see through to Glass’s plot twists, even when you expect them–was drawn up well enough at the very end of this issue, even after what felt like an otherwise rushed story.  Hey, I’m a sucker for sleeper agents.  Got a problem with that?

Frankenstein #12 is a helluva fun ride.  I’m telling you: Kindt can’t miss with the route he’s running here–not when he’s got Frank critiquing poor pyromaniacal poetry: “Work on your rhyme and meter.  Frankenstein does not kill the inept.”  Great stuff.

Well, then Daredevil Annual #1 has nothing to fear from Frankenstein.  It’s a billion pages of blech.  I don’t know; perhaps Alan Davis fans will see something in here worth celebrating. Hey, howzabout the Haitian Jar Jar Binks with the “gris gris and the ‘pwen”?  Maybe?  I suspect, however, that even they are wondering what good they could have done with the $5 they turned over for this disaster.  Ugh.  Maybe I should’ve bought Ozymandias, after all.

I enjoyed Archer & Armstrong #1.   Henry’s art is very good.  It’s clean, kinetic, and carries the story of A&A’s coming together well–even if it’s a story we’ve heard before in some form or another.  Am I’m willing to invest in the idea of The One Percent and their Nazi-esque occultist bent?  Yeah, why not?  And, come on: the bull and the bear masks are pretty funny–maybe too funny, actually, especially for the now-turn-the-page-and-dun-dun-dun-here-are-the-villains-for-the-first-story-arc moment.  I mean, I’m half expecting an opposite-of-erotic orgy scene to erupt out of nowhere and half expecting to see the leader of The One Percent unleash the Horns and the Claws on NYC to take down the cowled and caped soul of the city.  Am I the only one?

And that leaves one book for the Scottlight: Spider-Men #4.  Check back soon to see which way I go with this one.

Turning pages,

Scott

In Scott’s Bag (8/8)

Archer & Armstrong, bag, Batman, comics, Daredevil, Frankenstein, Insufferable, Lemire, Ozymandias, Scott, Spider-Men, Suicide Squad, The Underwater Welder, Thrillbent, Waid

Here’s what I found inside my bag:

The Expected Lot:

  • Batman #12
  • Suicide Squad #12
  • Frankenstein: Agent of Shade #12
  • Spider-Men #4
  • Archer & Armstrong #1

Didn’t See It Coming:

  • Daredevil Annual #1

Ozymandias #2 stared at me from where he belonged–from the rack.  I smiled back.  I paid up, said goodbye to my guy; and as I turned to leave,  I sensed something strange.  I could’ve sworn that Ozymandias was reaching out for me as I reached for the door.  I smiled again as I twisted the knob and clutched my bag to my chest.  Sure, it felt a little light; but for this week, that’s more than all right because I’ve got a couple “out of the bag” books to keep me busy, including:

  • Lemire’s The Underwater Welder (I’m pretty deep into in and loving every fathom.)
  • Waid’s Insufferable over on his website Thrillbent.  (I’ve started Week 1 and am curious enough to continue.)

Expect a Microview post in the very near future.

And I wonder: which book from this week’s bag will find its way into the Scottlight?

Scott

MoCCA Memories

MoCCA, Society of Illustrators

It was with a mixture of pride and melancholy that I received the news that MoCCA was being absorbed into the Society of Illustrators. Pride in seeing how far it had come. Y’see, I was there at the beginning. I remember our planning sessions over coffee at the Union Square Barnes and Noble and our first home sharing a lawyer’s office at 32 Union Square East. I remember all the nerves over the first MoCCA Art Festival. Would it be a success? Would New York support this kind of event? It seems self-evident now, but there were real doubts back then.

And then of course there was the Museum itself. I’ve heard the odd quibble about this exhibit or that, or about the direction of the museum from the chorus of keyboard know-it-alls. But for ten years, in the most difficult of climes, MoCCA did much worthy work to educate, preserve and promote the art of comics and cartoons and their creators. We can only hope that tradition continues in its new home.

Some memories:

Hanging out in Art Spiegleman’s apartment.

Getting an email from Neil Gaiman.

Partying with Long Island’s own Berndt Toast Gang at the legendary Bunny Bash.

The utter incongruity of a struggling 20-something like myself gladding hands in Steve Forbes personal galleries with the likes of Joan Rivers.

Carrying a large-screen television through the sultry streets of New York in June for one of the programs of the first MoCCA Art Festival.

Getting interviewed on live, early-morning television by News Channel 12, bleary-eyed from my cousin’s wedding the night before.

Watching a certain well-known creator from the Cartoon Network dancing shirtless and grinding MoCCA’s very surprised Founder and Chairman (yes, I went there).

But mostly I remember the remarkable people who were there at the beginning, making it all happen: Ken Wong, Jim Salicrup, Kristen Siebecker, Fred Van Lente, Liz Gorinsky, Alex Simmons, Kent Worcester, Ted Rall, Roger Reed, Lisa Harris, Chris Brimacombe, Klaus Janson, Sandy Schecter, Miriam Katin, Anne Carlton and everyone else who was there in the early days (if I’ve forgotten you on this list, I apologize). It was my privilege and pleasure to work with you. And much credit and thanks to Ellen Abramowitz and all of the dedicated folks who’ve kept it going all these years.

Finally, my most heartfelt thanks to Lawrence Klein. Without his vision, tenacity and enthusiasm, comic art still wouldn’t have a cultural home in the city of its birth. It isn’t often in this life that you meet someone who Dreams Big and then Makes It Happen. Lawrence is one of those people.

So wither the melancholy?

Because in many ways, it’s the end of an era. Don’t get me wrong: whatever circumstances dictated this move, MoCCA could hardly ask for a better home than the Society of Illustrators. But, just as there were at MoCCA’s birth, questions arise: Will the character of MoCCA change, and to what extent? Will its mission to preserve and promote comic and cartoon art continue to be pursued with such dedication and enthusiasm?  Might it become a stepchild of sorts to the older institution? Or will it rise to new heights under their auspices?

I wish The Society of Illustrators all the best in this new endeavor. One thing is certain: they have a lot to live up to.

Archer & Armstrong, Batman, comics, entertainment, Frankenstein, Ozymandias, Spider-Men, Suicide Squad

Looks like a pretty light week.  Here’s my pull list, broken up into sections pretty much for my own entertainment–unless, of course, you like it, too; then it’s for yours, as well.  I’m always willing to share!

Happy Periods:

Batman #12–> Got my talons deep into this one–and vice versa.

Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #12–> Kindt’s sewing together something special.  I’m completely on board.

Archer and Armstrong #1–> Valiant has rolled out some good stuff the last few months.  Why should this be any different?

Checking Out:

Suicide Squad #12–> Was on board big time at first.  But if this one doesn’t do it for me, I’m gone.

In the Short Run:

Spider-Men #4–> The last issue ended well enough, but it’s not like this series counts or anything.  Right?  Ultimately, this is a Bendis/Pichelli purchase.  Thank goodness it’s a limited series.

And a Surprise Visit from the Mother-in-Law:

Ozymandias #2–> It’s not on the ol’ pull list.  If it’s in my bag, so help me…

What are you looking forward to?

Scott

In Derek’s Bag (8/1)

04 Saturday Aug 2012

Hi all. I’m Derek, friend and colleague of Scott, though I suppose for these purposes I’m nerd number 2 (though I prefer ‘geek’ to ‘nerd’, as the latter, to my mind, infers a certain level of scientific and/or mathematic knowledge, while the former connotes a devourer of a given aspect of media culture, owing back to its original meaning: a sideshow freak who would eat anything put in front of him. Which I also identify with. But I digress.)

My list this week:

Action Comics #12

Animal Man #12

Swamp Thing #12

Batwing #12 (isn’t it a little weird that Batwing has the same numbering as Action? But I digress.)

Dial H #4

Sweet Tooth #36

A Vs. X #9

Daredevil #16

Hawkeye #1

Ultimate Spider-Man #13

Fury: My War Gone By #5

Beasts of Burden: Neighborhood Watch One Shot

Harbinger #2 (yes I realize a couple of these came out previous to this week, but I just picked them up, so they’re new to me!)

Dark Shadows #6

Lone Ranger: Snake of Iron #1

The Wheel of Time #28

(whew)

So either I read entirely too many comics or you don’t read enough.

In any case, I agree that Fury, DD and the Animal Man/Swamp Thing combo are the books I’m most excited about. However, since I tend to place my “main course” books somewhere in the middle of my reading pile, I figured I’d get the ball rolling with the one of the first books I read: Action.

It goes without saying that Grant Morrison is one of the smartest, most adventurous writers out there. He’s one of the few writers that court controversy not merely by the content of his stories, but by the way he structures them. He not only juggles a lot of balls at in the air; he zaps some of them with a time ray mid-flight so that he can catch them in the future and then send them hurtling through a vortex back to the past. And it’s up to the reader to keep up. There’s an exuberance to his approach that I’ve always found appealing.

Having said that, this issue, with its talk of Neo-Sapiens, Million-Pointed Spears, and the Oort-Kind, started to get a little too….abstract? What did you think?

Welcome to Images and Nerds, a shiny–like the Before Watchmen covers–new comics-related blog, where we’re beholden to a singular master: what we like.  That’s right: we’re going to be keeping it real up in here as we lose ourselves in fantasy worlds, in the creative visions of the current crop of creators from the majors and independents.

I’m excited to get this thing a-rollin’, but I’ve got some work to do first: I’ve got to read some comics!  I just got back from my favorite comic shop, which I’ll profile soon enough, with the following books in my bag:

Fury Max #5

Daredevil #16

Stormwatch #12

Swamp Thing #12

Animal Man #12

Dial H #4

Ultimate Spider-Man #13

Nite Owl #2

Action Comics #12

The book I’m going to read first: Fury Max.  (That’s quite an honor with Waid’s sinfully fun DD and Parts 1 and 2 of the Rotworld crossover also in the bag.)  Ennis is absolutely blowing it up with his take on everyone’s favorite one-eyed, foul-mouthed colonel.  I can’t wait to see what goes down in Cuba.  Hell, knowing what tack Ennis has taken thus far, it could be Miss Defabio…

I’m one happy nerd.

For now.

Time to turn some pages.

Scott
